Why Does My Dog Keep Licking Her Lips and What Can I Do?
Okay, so, I’ve got this dog, right? A real sweetie. But lately, she’s been doing this thing where she keeps licking her lips, like, a lot. It’s kind of weird and I was a little worried about my dog.
So, first thing I did was, I just watched her for a bit. You know, just to see if it was a one-time thing, or if she was doing it all the time. And yeah, she was definitely doing it more than usual. Not like, constant, but enough that I noticed.
My dog was acting weird, here’s how I figured it out.
- Observed: I kept an eye on her for a couple of days, making notes of when she was lip-licking the most.
- Checked her food: I made sure she wasn’t having any trouble with her food, like maybe it was too hard or something. Nope, food was fine.
- Looked for other signs: I also looked to see if she was showing any other weird symptoms like throwing up or not eating. She was eating fine, and not throwing up, so I ruled out any kind of stomach problems.
After ruling out the obvious stuff, I started to think maybe it was something behavioral. I was worried that she was stressed or anxious about something. I thought about any changes in our routine, you know, like, did a new neighbor move in with a loud dog? Nothing.
I even tried giving her extra attention, more walks, more playtime, just to see if that would help. She loved the extra attention, of course, but the lip-licking didn’t stop.
Eventually, after a few weeks I realized it was time to take her to the vet. I did not want to take any chances. The vet said that she was probably just feeling a little anxious and it’s something that happens sometimes with some dogs. They recommended I try some calming treats that are supposed to help with anxiety and also to make sure she has a safe space to relax. She said the combination of both should help.
I got some of those calming treats, and I made sure she had her favorite bed in a quiet corner of the room. And you know what? It actually helped! She still licks her lips sometimes, but it’s way less than before. So, I guess it really was just a bit of anxiety. I’m just glad I figured it out and she’s feeling better now.
If your dog is doing something weird, it’s always best to just keep an eye on them and, if you’re worried, take them to the vet. It’s better to be safe than sorry, you know?
