Alright, let's get into this thing about dogs and their beds. Specifically, the humping part. Yeah, it's a bit weird, right? I went through this with my own dog, Buster, a while back and spent some time figuring it out.

So, it started kinda suddenly. I'd catch Buster going at his bed like it personally offended him. My first thought, probably like most folks, was "Oh great, hormones?" But Buster's neutered, been that way for ages. So, that didn't quite add up in my head. It wasn't like he was trying it on with other dogs or people's legs, just... the bed. Mostly his main comfy one in the living room.

Watching and Wondering

I decided the best thing was just to observe. Like, really pay attention. When did he do it? What happened right before? Was he bored? Excited? Anxious?

I started noticing a few patterns. It wasn't random. Here’s what I saw:

  • After big excitement: Like when I came home after being out for a while, big greeting, lots of energy, then boom – straight to the bed for a minute or two.
  • During super-fun playtime: Get him really riled up with a tug toy or fetch inside? Sometimes he'd stop playing and go hump the bed instead.
  • When he seemed stressed: If there were loud noises outside, like fireworks way off, or if we had a bunch of new people over, sometimes he'd sneak off and do it. Seemed like a release valve, almost.

It rarely happened when he was just calm and chilling. It was always linked to some kind of heightened emotional state, good or bad.

Figuring It Out (My Way)

So, piecing it together from just watching Buster, I landed on a few ideas. It didn't seem strictly sexual, not in the way we think about it. He wasn't trying to mate with the bed. It felt more like an overflow behavior. Too much energy, too much stress, too much something... and humping was how he let it out.

I read online, people talk about dominance and stuff. Honestly? Didn't feel like that with Buster and his bed. Who's he dominating? The stuffing? Nah. Seemed way more like a displacement thing. Like when people pace or tap their fingers when nervous or excited.

I also considered if maybe it just felt good? Like scratching an itch? Possible. Dogs do weird stuff sometimes just 'cause.

What I Did (or Didn't Do)

Once I figured it was probably excitement or stress, I didn't make a huge deal out of it. If it was excitement, I'd try to calmly redirect him before he started. Maybe ask for a 'sit' or give him a chew toy to focus on instead. If it looked like stress, I'd focus on removing the stressor or giving him a safe, quiet space (away from the humping spot, maybe).

Sometimes I'd just gently interrupt him, call his name, get him to do something else. Didn't scold him though. Felt like punishing him for being overwhelmed wasn't the way to go.

Over time, paying attention to his triggers and redirecting seemed to lessen it a bit. But honestly, sometimes he still does it if he gets super hyped up. It's just part of his weird little personality now, I guess.

So, yeah. Why do dogs hump their beds? For my dog, Buster, it seems to be mostly about managing big feelings - excitement, stress, maybe just being plain overwhelmed. It’s less about making love to the bedding and more about letting off steam. Every dog's different, but that's what I saw in my own house.
