Why Do Dogs Put Their Paws Over Their Face: Understanding This Common Behavior.

Okay, so I’ve been noticing something kinda cute but also kinda weird with my dog, Buster. He’s a big, goofy golden retriever, and sometimes, out of nowhere, he just covers his face with his paws. It’s like he’s playing peek-a-boo or something, but I wasn’t sure why he was doing it. So, I got curious and did a little digging around.

Why Do Dogs Put Their Paws Over Their Face: Understanding This Common Behavior.

First, I started by just watching him more closely. Noticed that he did it more when he was chilling on the couch or when I came home from work. It seemed like he was relaxed when he did it, not stressed or anything.

Then, I hit up Google, just typing in “why do dogs put their paws over their face?” I found a bunch of articles and forum posts about it, and it looks like there are a few different reasons why dogs might do this.

  • Some folks online said their dogs did it when they were feeling shy or embarrassed. Like, if they did something silly, they’d cover their face like, “Oh no, I messed up!”
  • Others said their dogs did it to get attention. You know, like a little kid covering their eyes and saying, “You can’t see me!”
  • A few articles mentioned that it could be a way for dogs to self-soothe, like when they’re feeling anxious or a bit stressed out.
  • I also read that some dogs do it to wipe their faces, especially if they got something on them, such as food or whatever.

After reading all that, I started paying even more attention to Buster’s behavior. I realized he usually covered his face when I gave him a lot of attention, like when I was petting him or talking to him in that silly voice I use. So, in Buster’s case, it seems like he’s doing it for attention or maybe because he’s just really happy and content.

I also tried to see if he did it when he was feeling anxious. Once, there was a loud thunderstorm, and he was acting a little nervous. He was panting a bit and pacing around, but he didn’t cover his face. So, I don’t think that’s why he does it.

It’s like he’s giving me a doggy hug or something. Every time I see him do it, I can’t help but smile. Dogs are just so weird and wonderful, you know?

Now I feel I understood the reason why my dog puts his paws on his face. So, mystery solved! It looks like Buster is just a big, lovable goofball who likes to show his affection in a unique way. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
