Alright, so I wanted to share something I tried out with my dog, Buster, the other week. He gets bored with the same old treats, you know? And I was looking for something crunchy but maybe a bit healthier than some of the store-bought stuff.

Getting Started

I remembered hearing folks talk about celery for dogs. We always have some in the fridge because my wife likes it. So, I thought, why not? It's crunchy, mostly water, seemed harmless enough. Then I figured, dogs love peanut butter, right? Buster goes nuts for it. So, celery and peanut butter it was.

First thing, I went to the pantry and grabbed the peanut butter. Important step here: I double-checked the ingredients list. You really gotta make sure there's no xylitol in it. Heard that stuff is super dangerous for dogs. Luckily, the one we had was just peanuts and a bit of salt. Phew.

The Prep Work

Okay, so I grabbed a couple of celery stalks from the fridge. Gave them a good wash under the tap, got rid of any dirt. Then I chopped them up. I didn't want to give him a huge piece he might choke on, so I cut them into maybe inch-long pieces. Seemed like a good size for Buster, he's a medium-sized guy.

Next, the peanut butter. I just took a regular kitchen knife and scooped a little bit out. Not too much, just enough for flavor. I spread it right into the little groove on the celery stick. It was a bit fiddly, trying to get it in there neatly, but hey, it doesn't have to be perfect for a dog, does it?

Treat Time

Buster was watching me the whole time, of course. His tail was going like crazy. He knew something was up. I held out the first piece. He gave it a good sniff, then took it pretty gently.

  • First reaction: Sniff, sniff.
  • Second reaction: Lick the peanut butter.
  • Third reaction: Big crunch!

He seemed to really enjoy it! The crunch was loud, haha. He ate the whole thing right up and looked at me like, "Okay, where's the next one?"

My Thoughts After

I only gave him two or three pieces that first time. Didn't want to overdo it with something new. It went down well, no tummy troubles later or anything. He just seemed happy with his crunchy, tasty snack.

What I liked:

  • It felt like a healthier option.
  • Super easy and cheap to make.
  • Buster clearly loved the combo of crunch and peanut butter.

It did get a tiny bit messy with the peanut butter on his whiskers, but that was easy enough to wipe off. Since then, I've given it to him maybe once or twice a week as a special treat. Just a simple thing, but it works for us. He gets excited every time he sees me pull out the celery now.
