Alright, so we brought home our Goldendoodle pup a while back. Super exciting, right? But then came the big question: what the heck do we name this fluffy tornado? It sounds simple, but man, it took some doing.

Getting Started - The First Look

First thing I did was just stare at the little guy. He was all paws and fluff, kinda goofy, definitely friendly. That golden-ish, apricot-y fur stood out. So, my brain immediately went to names related to color or fluffiness. Thought about names like:

  • Goldie (too on-the-nose for me)
  • Sunny (maybe?)
  • Teddy (because, well, teddy bear)
  • Chewie (like Chewbacca, 'cause of the hair)

Wrote these down, but nothing felt quite right straight away. It felt kinda forced, just picking based on looks.

Hitting the Lists - What Everyone Else Does

Next step, I did what everyone probably does: I went online. Typed in stuff like "Goldendoodle dog names," "best names for friendly dogs," "popular puppy names." Whoa. The number of lists was crazy. Pages and pages. Some were good, gave me ideas, but a lot were just generic lists that didn't really connect.

I scrolled through lists of human names, nature names, funny names. Saw Cooper, Max, Bailey, Daisy, Lucy, Buddy... the usual suspects. Added a few more possibilities to my own scribbled list.

The Family Vote & Shortlist

Got the family involved. Big mistake? Maybe. Suddenly everyone had strong opinions. "No, that sounds like the neighbor's cat!" "That's too common!" "That one's too hard to say!" We debated back and forth. It helped narrow things down, though. We managed to get a shortlist of about five names we could all sort of agree on, or at least tolerate.

Our shortlist looked something like this (I forget the exact names now, but it was similar):

  • Cooper
  • Milo
  • Finn
  • Rosie (if it was a girl, ours was a boy)
  • Gus

The 'Try-Out' Phase

This was the important part for me. I started actually using the names. Just calling the pup. "Hey Cooper, c'mere!" "Milo, outside!" "Good boy, Gus!" You kinda get a feel for a name when you say it out loud, especially when you imagine yelling it across a dog park.

Some just didn't roll off the tongue. Some felt weird. Cooper felt pretty good. Gus was okay too. Finn sounded a bit short. Milo was decent.

Making the Call

After a day or two of trying them out, we landed on Cooper. It just felt right. Easy to say, sounded friendly like him, and wasn't too common but not weird either. The pup seemed to perk up a bit when we said it (probably just coincidence, but hey). So, Cooper it was.

Took a bit longer than I thought it would, wasn't just a quick pick from a list. But going through the brainstorming, the searching, the family arguments, and actually testing the names out loud – that whole process is what got us to the right name for our dog. Glad we took the time.
