Using a Pill Giver for Dogs, Quick and simple solution.
Okay, so I've got this dog, Max, and he's the pickiest eater ever, especially when it comes to taking pills. It used to be a wrestling match every single time. Seriously, I'd end up sweating more than he did. I tried everything – hiding it in cheese, peanut butter, you name it. He'd just eat around the pill and leave it sitting there, looking all smug.
Then, I found these pill givers things online, and thought, "Why not?" Figured I'd give it a shot.
The Experiment Begins
So, the pill giver arrives. It's basically a plastic tube with a plunger. Looks kinda like a weird syringe. My first attempt? Epic fail. I loaded the pill, went for the back of Max's throat, and... he clamped his jaws shut like a steel trap. I'm pretty sure I almost lost a finger.
I watched some YouTube videos. Turns out, you gotta be confident. And quick. Like ripping off a band-aid.
Round Two: Success (Mostly)
Next time, I was prepared. I had some treats ready as a distraction. I held Max's head steady (gently, of course!), opened his mouth, and pop - shot the pill to the back of his throat with the pill giver. I quickly followed it up with a treat, so he'd swallow it down.
It worked! He actually swallowed the pill! No spitting, no fighting, no drama. I felt like a genius.
My Routine Now
Now, it is my routine.
- Step 1: Get the pill and the pill giver ready. Make sure the pill is loaded securely.
- Step 2: Have a high-value treat on hand. Something Max really loves.
- Step 3: Get a good, but gentle, grip on Max's head. I usually talk to him calmly, so he doesn't freak out.
- Step 4: Open his mouth and quickly insert the pill giver as far back as I can without gagging him.
- Step 5: Depress the plunger to release the pill.
- Step 6: Immediately give him the treat.
It's not perfect every time. Sometimes he still tries to outsmart me, but it's a million times easier than it used to be. This little gadget has been a lifesaver. Seriously, if you're struggling with giving your dog pills, you gotta try one of these things.
