Stop your dog barking at strangers: easy training advice!
Okay, so today I wanted to figure out why dogs bark at strangers. It's something I've always wondered about, especially since my neighbor's chihuahua goes nuts at anyone walking by.

My Little Experiment
First, I observed my own dog, Buster. He's a pretty chill golden retriever, but even he has his moments. I noticed that he mostly barks at people when they approach the house directly, especially if they're carrying something big or moving fast.
So, I decided to test this out. I asked a friend, Sarah, to help me.
- I had Sarah walk past the house normally a few times. Buster barely reacted, just a little woof here and there.
- Then, I had her walk straight up to the front door, pretending to deliver a package. Buster went into full-on bark mode! It was much louder and more persistent.
- I repeated with another friend acting like jogging, and Buster also barked!
After doing all of this observation and simple testing, I finally got it.
From what I can tell, it's all about territory and perceived threat. Dogs see our homes as their den, and they're wired to protect it. When a stranger approaches, especially in a way that seems direct or unusual, the dog's instinct is to warn them off and alert their pack (that's us!).
It's not necessarily about the person being a "stranger," but more about how they're acting and where they are in relation to the dog's territory. Buster doesn't care about people walking down the street, but someone coming up to the door is a different story!
I'm not a dog expert, this is just a little home experiment. But now, I have a much better idea of why dogs do what they do. Makes sense, right?
