Older Dogs Panting Excessively? Here are Possible Causes!
Okay, here's my take on the topic, written in a casual, personal-experience style blog post format:

So, my old buddy, Buster, a golden retriever, started panting like crazy a while back. It wasn't just after walks, it was, like, all the time. I got pretty worried, so I started digging around to figure out what was going on.
First, I observed when it was happening. Was it after exercise? When he was excited? Or even when he was just chilling on the couch? Turns out, it was pretty much constant, but definitely worse after any kind of activity, even just walking to his food bowl.
My Investigation
Next, I did some basic checks. I felt his nose (still cold and wet, phew!). I looked at his gums (nice and pink, not pale). I even tried to get him to play, and he was still his goofy self, just…breathier.
Okay, so nothing obvious jumped out. Time for some online research! I spent a good few hours reading articles and forum posts. Here's what I roughly gathered:
- Normal Dog Stuff: Dogs pant to cool down, duh. They don't sweat like us.
- Getting Old: Older dogs, just like older people, might not be as efficient at, well, everything. Their bodies might have to work a little harder.
- Heart issues can make it harder for dogs to breathe.
- Breathing Problems: Same as with heart stuff, anything affecting their lungs makes breathing tougher.
- Pain or Anxiety: Sometimes, panting can be a sign they're hurting or stressed.
Because Buster is, let's face it, an old man, and the panting seemed excessive, I decided to take action.
I booked a vet appointment. Better safe than sorry, right?
The vet checked him over, listened to his heart and lungs, and even took some X-rays.

It could very well be just old age, but my vet suggested some basic bloodwork to check for anything else. I'm waiting for the results, I figure I made the right call taking my buddy, Buster to see the vet.
Fingers crossed it is nothing!
