Norwegian Puppy Names: Cute and Cool Ideas for Your New Pup!

Okay, so I decided to get a Norwegian Elkhound puppy. Super cute, right? But then came the hard part – picking a name! I wanted something that felt Norwegian, you know? Not just like, "Spot" or "Buddy." So I started digging.

Brainstorming and Research

First, I just brainstormed. What words do I even know that sound vaguely Scandinavian?

  • Viking – Too cliché, I thought.
  • Fjord – Kind of cool, but a bit… watery?
  • Loki – Everyone names their dog Loki!

Then I started looking for name meaning, and I figured I could pull some inspiration from there. I searched for common boy and girl dog names. I found:

  • For Male Dogs:
    • Asbjorn
    • Bjorn
    • Knut
  • For Female Dogs:
    • Astrid
    • Freja
    • Liv

I tried saying a bunch of the popular names I found, to see how they sounded and to say them easily. I thought "I like the sound of that, but it's a bit of a mouthful." I thought "I love that sound, but I like the way "Bjorn sounds better for my dog's name.

Making My Final Choice

Then I wrote out all the names I had picked out on a sticky note. I went out to the yard and called my new pup with a name, to see how he reacted, and how easily I was able to remember to call him that name.

After all of that I finally I narrowed down a few boy names and girl names, and I slept on the list for about a week. And finally, I chose a name that has a good sound, easy to say, and memorable, because ultimately, your dog's name will also be used by your Vet!
