So, I decided to really watch my dog, Buster, go at it with his toys the other day. Wasn't like, a scientific experiment or anything, just me, sitting on the floor, watching him.

First up, I pulled out that new squeaky squirrel I got him. He went nuts for it, like always. Grabbed it, shook it like crazy, you know the drill. That squeak, man. Drives him wild. But here's the thing, that happiness? Lasted maybe ten minutes tops before he found the squeaker inside and, well, performed surgery. Fluff everywhere. Typical Buster move.

Next, I tossed him the rubber ball. This one's tougher. He likes chasing it, brings it back sometimes. Mostly he just likes to gnaw on it. Sat there for a good long while, just chewing. It’s quiet, which is nice after the squeaker massacre. This one holds up pretty well, gotta say. Good old rubber.

Remembering the Old Days

It got me thinking about my last dog, Rocky. Rocky wasn't much for squeakers. He was a rope toy kinda guy. Tug of war was his jam, serious business. We had this one rope, thick thing, lasted for ages. Buster? He’ll tug for a minute, then gets bored and goes looking for something to shred. Different personalities, I guess. Funny how you get attached to their little quirks.

Anyway, back to Buster. I also tried one of those puzzle toys. You know, where you hide treats inside?

  • Put some kibble in the slots.
  • Showed him how to nudge the parts.
  • Waited to see what he'd do.

He sniffed it. Pushed it around with his nose a bit. Got a couple of treats out, then seemed to lose interest. Maybe it was too hard? Or maybe he just preferred the instant gratification of destroying the squirrel. Hard to tell with him sometimes. He just wandered off and started chewing on the leg of the coffee table instead. Sigh.

So, the rundown after my little observation session:
Squeaky toys: Fun for about 5 minutes, then it's just cleanup duty for me.

Rubber toys: Solid choice, keeps him busy chewing for a while. Lasts longer.
Puzzle toys: Hit or miss. Depends on his mood, I think. Or maybe the treats weren't high-value enough. Who knows.
The coffee table leg: Apparently a perennial favorite, despite my best efforts.

End of the day, you just try stuff. Some toys stick, some get ignored, some get obliterated. You just gotta find what your furry buddy actually enjoys playing with, even if it means vacuuming up fluff more often than you'd like. It's all part of the deal, right?
