Is Your Dog Peeing on Rugs? Learn the Reasons & Easy Fixes
Okay, so my dog, bless his furry little heart, has this annoying habit of peeing on rugs. Not all rugs, mind you, just... some. It was driving me nuts! I started this whole detective process to figure out what was going on.

Figuring Out the "Why"
First, I ruled out any medical issues. I took him to the vet for a checkup. Thankfully, the vet gave him a clean bill of health – no infections or anything like that. Phew!
Next, I started observing when and where he was doing it. I noticed it was mostly on these fluffy, shag rugs we have in the living room. The ones in the hallway, which are flatter and have a lower pile, were totally fine.
- Observation 1: Only shag rugs.
- Observation 2: Mostly in the living room.
- Observation 3: Seemed to happen more when we weren't actively watching him.
Then I thought about it from his perspective. Maybe he just... liked the feel of the shag rugs? Or maybe the scent of previous accidents was lingering, even though I thought I'd cleaned them thoroughly.
The Cleaning Frenzy (and Other Attempts)
So, I went on a cleaning spree. I rented a heavy-duty carpet cleaner, used a special enzymatic cleaner that's supposed to break down the urine smell, and scrubbed those rugs like my life depended on it. I even sprayed a pet deterrent spray on them afterward, hoping that would keep him away.
For a while, it seemed to work! He avoided the rugs, and I thought I'd cracked the code. But then, a few weeks later, bam! He did it again.
Changing Things Up
I was getting frustrated, so I decided to try something different. I rolled up the shag rugs and put them away in storage. I figured, no rugs, no problem, right?
And guess what? It actually worked! He hasn't peed on the floor since. It's been a few months now, and I'm cautiously * is very likely the texture that my dog feels good.
It's still a bit of a mystery why he was so drawn to those particular rugs, but at least the problem is solved (for now!). I might try reintroducing them slowly at some point, but for now, I'm enjoying a pee-free living room.
