Is It Normal for Dogs to Suck on Blankets? Discover the Reasons Behind This Behavior.
Okay, so, I’ve got this dog, right? A total sweetheart, loves to cuddle, follows me everywhere. But this dude has a weird habit – he’s obsessed with sucking on blankets. I’m not just talking about a little nibble here and there. We’re talking full-on, dedicated sucking sessions. It’s like he’s in a trance or something.
At first, I thought, “Maybe this is normal dog stuff?” After all I know puppies, they suck on things. It’s how they, like, explore the world. But this is my boy, He’s not a baby anymore. So, I got a bit worried that he was doing something weird.
I Did Some Digging
So, I started to pay more attention. I noticed he did it more when he was chilling on the couch or when I was away. This makes me start to wonder if it’s a comfort thing or if he misses me. I mean, dogs get lonely, right?
I watched a bunch of videos. I looked it up and it’s not just my dog. A lot of dogs do this. Some folks say it’s because they were taken from their moms too early. Others say it’s just a way to self-soothe. Like, when humans bite their nails or twirl their hair. It could be the same thing.
My Plan
- More Toys: I’m thinking maybe he needs more stuff to chew on. I’m gonna get him a bunch of new chew toys. Maybe that’ll distract him from the blankets.
- More Walks: I figured he might be bored, so I’m taking him out for longer walks. I’m also playing with him more when I’m home. We’re doing fetch, tug-of-war, all that good stuff.
- Comfy Bed: He’s got a bed, but maybe it’s not comfy enough. I’m gonna get him a super plush, cozy bed. Maybe if he’s got a really nice place to chill, he won’t feel the need to suck on blankets.
- Vet Visit: I have done all the above steps. Just in case, I took him to the vet. I wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything medical going on. The vet said he’s totally healthy. He told me that it is his habit or stress.
Anyway, I’m just gonna keep an eye on him. If he keeps doing it, and it doesn’t seem to be hurting him, I guess it’s just one of his quirks. Dogs, man. They’re weird, but we love ’em, right?
