How Much Manuka Honey for Dogs? Dosage Guide & Benefits

Okay, so my dog, Buster, had this persistent cough that just wouldn't quit. I tried a few different things, but nothing seemed to really work. Then, a friend of mine mentioned manuka honey. I'd heard of it for humans, but for dogs? I was intrigued, so I started digging.

My Research Journey

First, I Googled "manuka honey for dogs" and, man, was there a lot of information! I skimmed through a bunch of articles and forum posts. It seemed like most people were saying it was safe and potentially helpful, but the dosage was all over the place. Some were saying a tiny bit, others were saying a whole spoonful! Too confusing.

Experiment Time

I decided to start small. I mean, really small. Buster's a medium-sized dog, about 40 pounds. After my research, I've found a source that gave me this information:

  • Small dogs (under 20 pounds): 1/2 teaspoon per day.
  • Medium dogs (20-60 pounds): 1 teaspoon per day.
  • Large dogs (over 60 pounds): 2 teaspoons per day.

So based on this. I gave him about half a teaspoon of manuka honey mixed in with a little bit of his regular food. He gobbled it right up – no problem there!

Observing the Results

I did this for a few days, and honestly, I didn't notice a huge difference at first. I was a bit worried, thinking maybe it was just a hyped-up remedy. But I stuck with it, figuring it couldn't hurt.

Then, after about a week, I realized Buster's cough was definitely less frequent. It wasn't completely gone, but it was much better than before. I continued giving him the half-teaspoon dose for another week, and the cough almost disappeared entirely!

My Conclusion (For Now!)

So, based on my totally unscientific experiment, it seems like manuka honey did help Buster's cough. I started with a small dose (half a teaspoon for a 40-pound dog) and saw improvement after about a week or so. I'll probably keep giving it to him when he has a flare-up, but I'm definitely not a vet, so I'd say talk to yours before you try anything new with your furry friend!
