Help! Why is my dog biting his nails? Find out now!

Okay, so the other day I noticed something weird with my dog, Max. He was gnawing on his paws, specifically his nails, like he was trying to trim them himself! It was super odd, and honestly, a little concerning. I mean, he's never done this before, so I figured I'd better figure out what's going on.

My Little Investigation

First thing I did was a quick visual check. I gently took his paw and spread his toes to get a good look at his nails and the skin between them. I was looking for anything obvious, like:

  • Redness or swelling
  • Cuts or scrapes
  • Anything stuck between his toes or pads
  • Nails that were too long or broken

Everything looked pretty normal, which was both a relief and a bit frustrating. No easy answers!

Next, I thought about any recent changes. Had we switched his food? Nope. Started using a new cleaning product on the floors? Nope. Taken him on any walks in new, possibly irritating, places? Nope, nothing that I am remember.

So, I decided to do a little experiment. I took him for a walk in a really soft, grassy area, just to rule out any surface irritation. He still nibbled a bit afterward, but not as much. Hmm.

Then, I remembered that he'd been a bit itchy lately, scratching more than usual. Could it be allergies? Maybe he's allergic to something in the house or even his food, and it's making his paws itchy, leading to the nail biting? Seems to be a reason!

What I gonna Do Now

I think my next step is a vet visit. I'm not a doggy doctor, and it's always best to get a professional opinion. Better safe than sorry, right? I'll update with a result when I got a clear clue from vet!
