Ground Duck for Dogs: Is It Safe and Healthy for Your Pup?
Okay, so I've been meaning to try making my own dog food for a while now. My pup, Buster, has a bit of a sensitive stomach, and I wanted more control over what he's eating. I heard ground duck is a good option for dogs with allergies, so I figured, why not give it a shot? Here's how it went down.
Finding the Duck
First things first, I needed to get my hands on some ground duck. This wasn't as easy as I thought! My usual grocery store? Nope. The fancy butcher shop? Strike two. Finally, I found a local farmer's market that had a vendor selling all sorts of game meat. Jackpot!
Prepping the Ingredients
I didn't want to just give Buster straight-up duck. I mean, that sounds boring, even for a dog. So I grabbed a few other things:
- Sweet Potatoes: I figured these would be a good source of carbs and fiber.
- Carrots: Gotta have some veggies, right?
- Green Beans: More veggies! Buster actually loves green beans.
- Blueberries: For antioxidants.
- Supplements: The most important thing! I wanted more vitamins, so bought some vitamins supplements.
I washed and chopped all the veggies into bite-sized pieces. I kept the blueberries whole because, well, they're already pretty small.
Cooking Time!
I decided to go simple with the cooking method. I put the sweet potatoes and carrots in a pot with some water and steamed them until they were soft. I also added the vitamins *, I lightly cooked the ground duck in a pan. I made sure there was no pink left, just to be safe. Once everything was cooked, I tossed it all together in a big bowl – duck, sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, and blueberries. I made sure that I added the supplement.
The Taste Test
I let the mixture cool down completely before giving Buster a small portion. He went absolutely NUTS for it! He scarfed it down so fast, I thought he was going to inhale the bowl too. I guess that means it's a winner!
Storing the Leftovers
I had a lot of food left over, so I divided it into individual portions and put them in the freezer. That way, I have a good supply of homemade dog food ready to go. Each portion is probably good for a couple of days, so I just take one out the night before and let it thaw in the fridge.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. It was a bit of work, especially finding the duck, but seeing Buster enjoy his food so much makes it totally worth it. Plus, I feel good knowing exactly what's going into his meals. I'll keep doing this for him!
