Okay, folks, let me tell you about my little adventure with building a window blocker for my dogs.

My DIY Dog Window Blocker Project

So, I have these two adorable but incredibly nosy golden retrievers. Love 'em to bits, but they lose their minds barking at every single thing that moves outside – squirrels, mailman, leaves blowing in the wind, you name it. It was driving me (and probably my neighbors) a little crazy.

I looked online for solutions, but everything seemed either too expensive or just wouldn't work with my window setup. I needed something to block their view of the lower part of the window, but I didn't want to completely black out the whole thing. Natural light is important, you know?

Then, a moment! I decided, "Heck, I'll just build something myself!"

The Building Process (It Was Easier Than I Thought!)

First, I measured the window. I needed the width and the height of the area I wanted to cover. My goal was to block about the bottom two-thirds of the window, leaving the top open for light.

Next, I headed to the local hardware store. Here's what I grabbed:

  • Some sturdy cardboard (I figured I'd start cheap and easy)
  • A roll of that frosted window film – you know, the kind that lets light through but obscures the view
  • Packing tape (because who doesn't love packing tape?)
  • A box cutter (safety first, kids!)

Back home, I laid out the cardboard on the floor and cut it to the size I needed, based on my earlier measurements. I actually ended up making two separate panels, one for each side of the window (it's a double-hung window).

Then, I unrolled the frosted film and cut it slightly larger than the cardboard panels. I stuck the film onto the cardboard, smoothing out any bubbles as best as I could. It wasn't perfect, but hey, it's for the dogs, not an art gallery.

I used the packing tape to reinforce the edges of the cardboard and to secure the film even more. I didn't want any floppy edges or peeling film.

Installation and the Grand Finale

Finally, I installed my makeshift window blockers. I simply wedged them into the window frame. They fit snugly, and because they were cardboard, they were light enough to stay put without any extra hardware. The height was at my waistline, it's perfect!

And guess what? It worked! My dogs could still look out the top part of the window, but the bottom part – the "squirrel TV" zone – was nicely obscured. The barking significantly reduced, and I could finally enjoy some peace and quiet.

Sure, it's not the prettiest solution, but it's functional, cheap, and most importantly, it solved my problem. I might eventually upgrade to something more permanent, like maybe some thin plywood instead of cardboard, but for now, this DIY dog window blocker is a total win!
