Dog peeing on your pillow? Heres why it happens and how to stop it for good!
Okay, so, it all started a few weeks ago. I woke up one morning, and something just felt off. You know that feeling when your senses are instantly heightened? Yeah, that’s what I felt. Then I smelled it – a faint, but distinct, odor of dog pee. At first, I thought maybe I was just imagining things, but then I saw it – a damp spot right on my favorite pillow!
My dog, Buster, a usually well-behaved golden retriever, was sitting at the foot of the bed, looking all innocent. I was baffled. This had never happened before. I immediately stripped the bed, washed everything, and chalked it up to a one-time accident. But boy, was I wrong.
It kept happening. Not every day, but often enough to make me seriously worried. I started observing Buster more closely. Was he drinking more water than usual? Was he showing any signs of discomfort? I even took him to the vet for a check-up, thinking it might be a urinary tract infection or something, which the vet called “UTI”.
The vet gave Buster a clean bill of health, physically at least. I was both relieved and frustrated. If it wasn’t a health issue, then what was it? I started doing some digging online, reading articles, and forum posts about similar situations.
I stumbled upon a few theories. Some people suggested it might be stress or anxiety. Now that I thought about it, there had been some changes around the house. We recently got a new kitten, and I’ve been working longer hours lately. Could Buster be feeling neglected or stressed out by the new addition to our family?
- I made a conscious effort to spend more quality time with Buster, just him and me. We went for longer walks, played fetch in the park, and I even gave him extra belly rubs.
- I tried to create a more stable routine for him, feeding him at the same time each day, and ensuring he had a quiet, comfortable space to retreat to when he needed some alone time.
- I started using a special enzyme cleaner to thoroughly clean any areas he had marked, hoping to eliminate any lingering odors that might be tempting him to repeat the behavior.
- I put my favorite pillow on the high shelf where Buster cannot reach.
Here’s what I tried:
It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I think we’re finally making some progress. The accidents are becoming less frequent, and Buster seems a lot more relaxed overall. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m hopeful that we’re on the right track. Fingers crossed!
