Dog Keeps Scratching and Injuring Skin: Find Vet Help Now!

Okay, so my dog, bless his furry little heart, has been scratching like crazy lately. It started a few weeks ago, just a little itch here and there. I didn't think much of it at first, you know? Dogs scratch. But then it got worse. Way worse.

I noticed him really going at it, rubbing his face on the carpet, gnawing at his paws, and scratching his ears until they were red. He was clearly miserable, and that's when I started to get really worried.

The Investigation Begins

First thing I did was check for fleas. I've dealt with those little buggers before, and it's not fun. I parted his fur, looking closely at his skin, especially around his tail and neck. Nothing. Not a single flea. Whew, a small victory, but the mystery remained.

Next, I considered allergies. We hadn't changed his food recently, but maybe it was something in the environment? Spring was in full swing, so pollen was a definite possibility. I started paying closer attention to when he seemed to scratch the most – was it after walks? After being in a certain room? I couldn't really pinpoint a specific trigger, though.

Vet Visit Number One

Since I was getting nowhere on my own, I booked an appointment with the vet. They did a thorough examination, checking his skin, ears, and paws. They also asked me a bunch of questions about his diet, environment, and any recent changes.

The vet suggested it could be allergies and prescribed some antihistamines. They also recommended a special shampoo to help soothe his skin. I felt relieved – finally, some answers and a plan of action!

The Antihistamine Experiment

  • I was to give the dog 1 pill every day.

I followed the vet's instructions religiously. I gave him the antihistamines every day, used the special shampoo, and kept a close eye on him. For a few days, it seemed like things were improving. He was scratching a little less, and he seemed a bit more comfortable.

But then… the scratching came back. With a vengeance. He was back to rubbing, gnawing, and scratching, and now he was starting to develop hot spots – red, irritated patches of skin. It was heartbreaking to watch.

Vet Visit Number Two (and Beyond)

Back to the vet we went. This time, they suggested running some allergy tests. It was a bit pricey, but I was desperate to figure out what was going on. We did the tests, and they came back showing sensitivities to a few different types of grass and pollen.

So, now we're on a new regimen. We're trying a different medication, a special diet, and I'm doing my best to keep him away from the things he's allergic to (which is easier said than done, let me tell you!).

It's still a work in progress, and some days are better than others. But I'm determined to get to the bottom of this and help my furry friend find some relief. It's a journey, for sure, but we'll get there. He had one good day last week, so he can have better days again.
