Dealing with Soft and Smelly Dog Poop: Easy-to-Follow Advice for Owners

So, the other day, I noticed something was off with my dog, Buster's, poop. It was way softer than usual, and, oh boy, the smell! It could clear a room, seriously. I was like, "This ain't normal," and, of course, my first instinct was to hit up the internet. But, man, there was a lot of overwhelming, technical jargon. I just wanted some simple answers!
Figuring Out the Food
My first thought was, "It's gotta be the food." We'd switched to a new brand about a week before, one of those "grain-free" kinds that's supposed to be super healthy. I'd heard some dogs have trouble digesting those, so I decided to go back to Buster's old food. That was step one.

Adding Some Fiber
After a couple of days on the old food, things were a little better, but still not great. I remembered reading somewhere that sometimes dogs need more fiber. So, I grabbed some plain canned pumpkin – not the pie filling, just the plain stuff. I mixed in a spoonful with each of Buster's meals.

Watching for Other Stuff
While I was messing with his food, I also kept a close eye on Buster himself. Was he drinking enough water? Was he acting like his usual, goofy self? Or was he all mopey and tired? Luckily, he was still bouncing off the walls, so I wasn't too worried about anything super serious.

The Result (Thank Goodness!)
It took a few days, but slowly but surely, Buster's poop started to firm up. The smell also got way better – back to the normal dog-poop smell, which, believe it or not, was a relief! I think the combination of going back to his old food and adding the pumpkin really did the trick.
I'm definitely going to keep an eye on things, and if the soft, smelly poop comes back, I'll take him to the vet, just to be safe. But for now, I'm pretty happy with how things turned out. It was a bit of a smelly learning experience, but hey, that's part of being a dog owner, right?
