Okay, here's my blog post about figuring out how much to feed my Dachshund puppy:

So, I got this adorable little Dachshund puppy, right? Cutest thing ever, but I was totally clueless about how much to feed him. I mean, I didn't want to starve the little guy, but I also didn't want him to turn into a sausage roll on legs. It was a real head-scratcher!

My First Steps

First, I grabbed the bag of puppy food I'd bought. It had all these charts and recommendations, but honestly, it felt like I needed a PhD to understand it. It talked about "cups per day" and "weight of the puppy," and I was like, "Dude, I just want to feed my dog!"

Trial and Error (Mostly Error)

I started with what seemed like a reasonable amount – a little scoop, maybe half a cup. My puppy, bless his heart, wolfed it down in about 30 seconds flat. Then he looked at me with those big, pleading eyes like, "Is that it? I'm still hungry!"

So, I gave him a bit more. And a bit more. This went on for a few days, and I quickly realized I was probably overdoing it. His poops were getting... well, let's just say they were a bit too frequent and a bit too soft. Not fun to clean up, let me tell you!

Asking for Help!

I decided to call my vet, because, you know, they're the experts. She was super helpful and asked me a bunch of questions: How old is he? How much does he weigh? What kind of food am I feeding him?

She gave the suggestion that I should give 1 cup everyday, divid the 1 cup to 4 meals.

Figuring It Out(Finally!)

  • I also weighed the puppy, followed the vet suggestion.
  • Then, I actually read the food bag instructions with a bit more focus. I realized I had been misinterpreting the chart.
  • I measured out the recommended amount for his weight and age, and it was way less than I'd been giving him!
  • I split that amount into four small meals throughout the day, just like the vet said.

The Happy Ending

It took a few days, but we finally found the sweet spot. He was eating enough to be satisfied, his poops were normal (thank goodness!), and he had plenty of energy for zoomies around the house. It was such a relief!

So, my big takeaway from this whole experience? Don't be afraid to ask for help, and don't eyeball the food! Measure it out, follow the instructions and adjust as needed. Your puppy (and your nose) will thank you for it!
