Makes me think back to when we first got Max. Well, he wasn't Max right away. Took us forever to land on that one. It was a whole thing, believe me.

The Great Naming Debacle

We'd just moved into this new place, boxes everywhere still. It was a bit of a stressful time. Left my old job, the one where you felt like just another cog in the machine, started something new. Money was tighter than usual. Then, boom, the wife says, 'Let's get a dog!'

Found this little guy at the local shelter, mix of who-knows-what, all ears and paws. Cutest thing. Bringing him home was the easy part. Naming him? That was war.

  • My daughter, she was maybe ten then, wanted something fancy. Like 'Captain Sparkletoes'. Seriously.
  • My son wanted 'Shredder'. Because, you know, ninjas.
  • My wife was leaning towards something sensible, maybe 'Buddy' or 'Rocky'.
  • Me? I just wanted something easy to yell across the park.

We went back and forth for days. Wrote lists. Vetoed each other's choices. Got grumpy about it. The poor dog didn't know what to answer to. He'd just look confused when we called him 'Hey You' or 'Dog'.

I remember one evening, after another pointless debate that ended with my daughter stomping off because we wouldn't agree to 'Sir Fluffington the Brave', I was just sitting there, watching the dog chew on an old slipper. He looked up at me, wagged his tail a bit. And I thought, 'He just looks like a Max'.

Sometimes Simple is Best

Said it out loud. 'How about Max?' Everyone stopped. Looked at the dog. Looked at me. And kinda nodded. Max. Simple. Solid. Fit him.

So yeah, Max it was. All that fuss, all that drama, for a plain name like Max. When you think about it, names like Benji have that same feel. Simple, classic, no arguments needed. Maybe that's the way to go sometimes. Saves you a week of family arguments, anyway. Or maybe the arguments are part of settling in together, who knows. Life's funny.
