Beef and pumpkin dog food: Heres how to make it at home.
Okay, so I’ve been wanting to make my own dog food for a while now. I finally decided to give it a shot, and I went with a beef and pumpkin recipe. Sounded pretty simple, right?
First, I gathered all my ingredients. I got some lean ground beef, because that seemed like the best option, and of course, a can of pure pumpkin puree, not the pie filling, which is a big no-no for dogs. I also chopped up some carrots and green beans, because every dog needs their veggies, you know?
Then, I started cooking the beef in a big pot. I just browned it up, making sure to drain off any extra fat. While the beef was cooking, I steamed the carrots and green beans until they were soft enough for my pup. You don’t want them too crunchy.
Once the beef was cooked, I added in the pumpkin puree and the cooked veggies. I stirred everything together really well, making sure it was all nicely combined. It actually started to smell pretty good, not gonna lie.
I let the whole mixture simmer for a bit, just to let all the flavors meld together. You could probably cook some quinoa or rice separately to mix in, but I skipped that this time around. I wanted to see how my dog liked it without any grains first.
After about 15 minutes of simmering, I took the pot off the heat and let it cool down completely. You definitely don’t want to burn your dog’s mouth. I portioned it out into some containers and stuck them in the fridge.
- Lean ground beef – the main protein source.
- Pumpkin puree – good for digestion.
- Carrots – chopped and steamed.
- Green beans – chopped and steamed.
Ingredients
My dog absolutely loved it! He gobbled it right up. It felt good to give him something homemade and healthy. I’ll definitely be making this again, and maybe next time I’ll try adding some other veggies or a bit of cooked sweet potato. Overall, it was a pretty easy and successful first attempt at making dog food. Woof!
