Are there side effects with the 9 in one shot for dogs? What every pet parent should be aware of.
Alright, so the other day it was time for my dog's annual check-up and, you know, the usual round of shots. I always try to stay on top of this stuff, it just feels like the responsible thing to do, keeping him safe from all those nasty bugs out there.

Getting Ready
First thing, I called up my regular vet. Made the appointment. They know us pretty well there. I just confirmed we needed the yearly wellness check and the big combo vaccine, the one folks sometimes call the '9-in-1' or something similar. Covers distemper, parvo, hepatitis, lepto, all that jazz in one go, basically. Makes life easier than multiple visits for different jabs. I checked my dog's little health booklet just to be sure we were due, yep, right on schedule.
The Vet Visit
The morning came, got the leash ready. My dog actually doesn't mind the car, thankfully. So we hopped in and drove down. The waiting room wasn't too busy, which was nice. Filled out a quick form, mostly just confirming nothing major had changed with his health since last year. Then, it was our turn.
The vet tech weighed him first – holding steady, good boy. Then the vet came in, did the usual check-over: listened to his heart and lungs, checked his eyes, ears, teeth. Gave him a good feel all over. Everything looked okay, which is always a relief to hear.
The 'Shot' Itself
Then came the main event. The vet prepared the vaccine. Now, they call it '9 in one shot', and maybe it feels like that because it's all done super quick in one appointment, covering nine things. Honestly, it was just a quick poke or two. My dog’s pretty brave, I gotta say. He barely flinched. I was right there, giving him a little scratch behind the ears, talking to him. The vet was quick and smooth. Over before we really knew it.
It's way better than it used to be years ago, feels much more streamlined now. Get it all done at once and you're good for another year for most of those things.
Afterwards
Paid up at the front desk, got his health booklet updated with the vaccine sticker. The vet mentioned to just keep an eye on him for the rest of the day. Sometimes dogs can be a bit sleepy or maybe a little sore where they got the injection. They told me the common things to watch for:
- A bit tired or less active than usual
- Maybe a little bump or soreness at the injection spot
- Loss of appetite for a meal or two
Luckily, my guy was totally fine. Maybe a little quieter that evening, took an extra nap, but by the next morning, he was back to his usual bouncy self, demanding walks and treats. No issues at all.
So yeah, that was our experience getting the big combo vaccine this year. Straightforward, quick, and gives you that peace of mind knowing they're protected. Definitely worth doing.
