Why is my dog coughing blood? (Possible health problems explained simply)
Okay, let me walk you through a really scary day I had recently. It started like any other morning, making coffee, letting my dog, Buster, out back. He's getting on a bit, you know, but still full of beans most days.

So, Buster comes back inside, trots over to his water bowl, and then it happens. This awful hacking cough. Not just a little throat-clearing thing, but a deep, wracking cough. I've heard him cough before, maybe swallowed wrong or got some dust, but this sounded different. Rougher. Then I saw it. On the beige rug, of course. A small splatter of bright red blood.
Man, my blood ran cold. Seeing your dog cough up blood, even a tiny bit, just sends you into immediate panic mode. My mind started racing. What did he eat? Did he choke on something sharp? Is it his lungs? You just don't know, and Google is NOT your friend in these moments, trust me.
First thing I did was try to stay calm, mostly for Buster's sake. He looked confused and a bit scared himself. I scooped him up – he's not exactly a lap dog anymore, but I managed. Grabbed my keys and wallet, didn't even change out of my pajamas, just threw on shoes.
Called the vet on the way, told them I was coming in, emergency. They know Buster, thankfully. The drive was maybe 15 minutes, but it felt like hours. Every little whine or cough from the passenger seat made my heart jump.
At the Vet's Office
They took us right back. The vet tech was super calm, which helped me a little. Asked me a bunch of questions:
- When did it start?
- How much blood? Bright red or dark?
- Any other symptoms? Lethargy? Loss of appetite?
- Any chance he ate something weird? Rat poison? Toys?
I answered best I could. Just the coughing, the blood was bright red, and it happened just now. He seemed okay otherwise, maybe a bit freaked out.
Then the vet came in. Did a thorough check-up. Listened to his chest, checked his gums, felt his belly. Buster was a good boy through it all, just leaned against my leg. The vet said we needed to do some tests to figure out what was going on. Couldn't just guess.
So, they took Buster back for X-rays and some blood work. That waiting period is the worst, isn't it? Just sitting there, imagining all sorts of terrible things. I tried reading a magazine, but couldn't focus.

Getting Answers
Felt like an eternity later, the vet came back out. Sat down with me. Turns out, Buster had a nasty case of bronchitis, like a really severe chest infection. The vet explained that sometimes, with intense coughing, small blood vessels in the airways can rupture. It looks terrifying (and it is!), but in his case, it wasn't coming from deep in his lungs or stomach, which was my biggest fear.
The relief was huge. Just knowing what it was made a world of difference. It wasn't the absolute worst-case scenario my brain had cooked up.
They gave Buster an injection, some antibiotics, and a cough suppressant to take home. The vet stressed keeping him calm, no rough play, and short, easy walks for a while. Follow-up appointment scheduled.
Driving home, Buster was sleepy from the shot but seemed more comfortable. I cleaned up the spot on the rug, feeling about a thousand times lighter than I did that morning. It was a stark reminder, though. These guys depend on us completely. Seeing blood is scary, but jumping into action, getting to the vet quickly, that's the key. Don't wait, don't guess. Just go.
