Dogs and Rocks: Why Do They Like Them So Much? (Explained!)
Okay, so the other day, I was hanging out at the park with my dog, Buster. He's a golden retriever, full of energy, loves to play fetch. But this time, instead of chasing the ball, he started digging around and came back with a... rock. Yeah, a plain, grey rock. He was so proud of it, wagging his tail like crazy, nudging it with his nose. It got me thinking, why do dogs like rocks so much?

I decided to do some digging myself (pun intended!). I started with the most obvious thing: observation.
My Rock-Solid Investigation
- Watching Buster: I spent a few days just watching Buster in the yard and at the park. I noticed he wasn't just picking up any rock. He seemed to be sniffing around, almost like he was searching for the "perfect" one. Sometimes he'd pick one up, mouth it for a bit, then drop it and keep looking.
- Different Sizes and Shapes: He seemed to prefer rocks that were small enough to carry, but not so small that he could accidentally swallow them. Smooth ones seemed to be more appealing than jagged ones.
- It's Not Just Buster: I started chatting with other dog owners at the park. Turns out, Buster's not the only rock-hound! A lot of dogs, especially puppies, seem to have a thing for rocks.
So, after my little field study, I tried figuring some things out. It really seems to be about a few things for them.
- The Texture: Maybe some dogs like how rocks feel, smooth and cool. Could be to help with teething.
- New Toy to Play: Dogs, especially puppies, have strong prey drive, like to play. Rocks are easy to play with.
- Oral fixation: Maybe dogs chew rock to clean teeth?
I'm still not 100% sure why Buster loves rocks so much, but it's definitely fascinating to watch him. It just goes to show that even the simplest things can be a source of joy for our furry friends. As long as he's not swallowing them, I guess I'll let him enjoy his rocky treasures!
