Why Does My Dog Smell Like a Skunk? Simple Tips to Get Rid of the Odor!
Okay, so the other day, I noticed this really weird smell in my house. At first, I thought maybe something had gone bad in the fridge, so I cleaned the whole thing out. But the smell was still there! Then I realized it was coming from... my dog, Max!
He smelled exactly like a skunk. Now, Max is a curious dog, always sniffing around in the backyard, so I immediately figured he must have gotten into a fight with a skunk.
What I Did
- First, I kept Max outside. No way was that smell coming inside any further!
- Next, I put on some old clothes.I had a feeling this would be messy and time-consuming,so I prepared myself in advance.
- Then I googled "dog sprayed by skunk what to do," and I'm so glad I did! It turns out, regular dog shampoo won't cut it. I was so confusing about what can elimate the stink and how to wash.
- I immediately followed everthing google told and ordered online,I found a recipe for a special cleaning solution:
- 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap
- While wearing rubber gloves,I carefully mixed the solution and applied to Max's fur,and wait for about 5 miniutes.
- After waiting,I completely rinsed the solution with a large amout of water and repeat the steps one more time.
I mixed up that concoction and scrubbed Max down with it. He wasn't thrilled, but he seemed to understand it was for his own good. I rinsed him really well, and the smell was mostly gone. He still had a faint skunky odor, but it was way better than * works!
I learned my lesson, though. I'm going to be way more careful about letting Max roam around in the yard, especially at dusk and dawn when skunks are most active. And I'm definitely keeping that homemade skunk-remover recipe handy, just in case!
