Constant scratching! Why is my puppy scratching his collar so much?
Okay, so my new puppy, Gus, kept scratching at his collar like crazy. It was driving me nuts, and I was worried he was hurting himself. I needed to figure out what was going on!

First Observation: The Obvious
First, I checked the collar itself. Was it too tight? Too loose? I made sure I could fit two fingers comfortably underneath it. Nope, the fit seemed fine.
Next Step: Material Matters
Then, I thought about the collar material. It was a basic nylon collar, the kind you get at any pet store. Could he be allergic? I've heard of dogs being sensitive to certain materials. So, I took off the nylon collar.
Experiment Time: Trying Something New
- I borrowed a soft, cotton collar from a friend who has a dog with sensitive skin.
- I put it on Gus, making sure, again, that it wasn't too tight.
Waiting and Watching
This was the hardest part – the waiting! I kept a close eye on Gus for the next few hours. He still scratched a little, but it was definitely less frequent than before.
Further Investigation: Could It Be Something Else?
Even though the cotton collar seemed to help, I wasn't 100% convinced. Could there be something else irritating his skin? I examined the area around his neck really carefully. I didn't see any redness, bumps, or anything unusual.
The "Aha!" Moment (Maybe?)
Then, I remembered something! I had just given Gus a bath a couple of days ago. Maybe some shampoo residue was still on his fur and irritating his skin? I grabbed a damp cloth and wiped down his neck really well, just in case.
The Result (So Far!)
Between switching to the cotton collar and wiping down his neck, Gus is scratching way less. He seems much more comfortable. I'm still keeping an eye on him, but I think I've solved the mystery... for now, at least! It might have been a combination of the nylon and some leftover shampoo. Puppies, man, they keep you on your toes!
