Easy Vegetarian Pill Pockets for Dogs: Hide Meds in Tasty Treats!
Okay, so I've got a picky eater on my hands – my dog, Buster. He needs his meds, but he's a master at spitting out pills. I heard about pill pockets, but Buster's also got a sensitive stomach, and a lot of the store-bought ones have stuff in them that might upset his tummy. So, I figured, why not try making my own vegetarian version? Here's how it went down:

The Great Experiment: DIY Vegetarian Pill Pockets
First, I raided my pantry. I needed something sticky, something tasty (to Buster, at least), and something that wouldn't fall apart. Here's what I grabbed:
- Peanut butter (the natural kind, no added sugar or xylitol – that stuff is super bad for dogs!)
- Oat flour (I just whizzed up some regular oats in my blender until they were powdery)
- Banana (Mashed, make add more moist for the shape)
Then came the mixing. I dumped a spoonful of peanut butter into a bowl, added a mashed ripe banana, and then started sprinkling in the oat flour. I mixed it all up with a fork, adding more oat flour a little at a time until it formed a dough. It was kinda like making cookies, but, you know, for a dog who hates pills.
The dough was pretty sticky, which is good! I pinched off little bits and rolled them into small balls – big enough to hide a pill, but not too big for Buster to swallow in one gulp. He is sneaky, and try to spit the pills out.
The moment of truth! I grabbed one of Buster's pills, tucked it inside a homemade pill pocket, and offered it to him. He sniffed it cautiously (he's no fool), then GULP! Down it went! Success!
I made a whole bunch of these pill pockets and stashed them in the fridge. They're not super pretty, but they work! And I know exactly what's in them, so no worries about tummy troubles. Plus, it's way cheaper than buying the pre-made ones.
I will keep doing and recording any other new recipes I figured out. For my Buster, all things are worthy!
