Best Stone Names for Dogs: Top Picks for Male & Female!
Okay, so I've got a new puppy, super cute, but I was totally blanking on names. My friend suggested looking at "stone" names, which I thought was kinda weird at first, but then I got really into it. Here's how I went about finding the perfect rocky name for my little guy.

Brainstorm Time
First, I just started listing every stone I could think of. You know, the basic ones:
- Granite
- Marble
- Slate
- ...and that's about all I could remember from high school geology.
Clearly, I needed some help.
Hitting the Books (and the Internet)
I grabbed my old, dusty encyclopedia (yeah, I still have one!) and flipped to the "minerals" section. Then I hit the internet, just searching for "types of stones" and "gemstone names." Wow, there are a LOT more stones out there than I realized! My list got way bigger, way faster. I added stuff like:
- Jasper
- Flint
- Onyx
- Cobalt (Okay, that's more of a metal, but it's a cool color!)
- Pebbles and Rocky-very literal.
Narrowing it Down
I looked at my puppy, a fluffy, kinda gray-ish mutt. I want something that matched the fur.
Some names just didn't feel right. "Granite" felt too harsh for my soft, little dog. "Marble" sounded too fancy. I wanted something strong but also kinda cute.
I crossed off a bunch of names, leaving me with a smaller, more manageable list.
The Finalists
After much deliberation (and asking my puppy to "sit" for each name – he wasn't very helpful), I narrowed it down to these:

- Flint
- Jasper
- Rocky
The Winner
I said each name out loud, multiple times, trying to get a feel for them. Finally, I settled on... Rocky! It just felt right. It's a classic, it's a little bit tough, but it's also playful. Plus, "Rocky Road" ice cream is my favorite, so there's that.
So, that's how I ended up naming my dog Rocky, thanks to a deep dive into the world of stones. He seems to like it, or at least he doesn't complain when I call him. Hope this helps any other dog owners struggling to find the perfect name!
