Is it bad? Why is my dog cobbing me like Im corn?
Okay, so the other day, I noticed my dog, Buddy, doing this weird thing with his mouth. It looked like he was nibbling on corn on the cob, but, like, there was no corn. Just air. I was like, "What the heck is going on?" So, I, you know, being the concerned dog parent, started digging.
My Dog is Cobbing? What is Going on?
First, I grabbed my phone and started Googling. I typed in stuff like, "dog nibbling air," "dog chewing nothing," "dog corn cob motion mouth," you get the idea. I was just throwing everything at the wall to see what would stick.
I fell down a rabbit hole of dog forums and vet websites. Some people said it was a sign of excitement, others said it could be stress, and a few mentioned it might even be a dental issue.
- Excitement? Maybe, but he wasn't really doing anything exciting at the time.
- Stress? Possibly, but he seemed pretty chill.
- Dental problems? Hmm, that got me thinking.
I was getting some information online, and next I took a closer look at Buddy's mouth. I pried open his jaws (gently, of course!) and peeked inside. I didn't see anything obvious, no stuck food or anything, but I'm no vet, so I wasn't 100% sure.
Then, I started observing him more closely. I paid attention to when he did the cobbing thing. Was it after eating? Before walks? When he was just chilling on the couch? and then I write them down.
I noticed a pattern. He seemed to do it most often after he ate, especially if he had a chewy treat. That made me think maybe something was getting stuck in his teeth, or maybe he just liked the feeling of chewing.
So, I made a vet appointment. Better safe than sorry, right? I explained everything to the vet, all my Googling and observations. She took a good look at Buddy's teeth and gums.
Turns out, he had a tiny bit of tartar buildup in the back of his mouth. Nothing major, but enough to maybe cause some irritation. The vet recommended a dental cleaning, and also suggested I switch to a dental chew that was a little less hard.
I did that, and guess what? The cobbing stopped! It was such a relief. So, yeah, that's my story of how I figured out why my dog was "cobbing." Turns out it was a simple fix, but it took a little bit of detective work to get there!
