Okay, so I've been messing around with this whole "no shock collar for dogs" thing, and let me tell you, it's been a journey. Here is how I went about it all from the start.

I started out pretty clueless, just like anyone else. I mean, I love my dog, a big goofy golden retriever named Buddy, but his barking was driving me and my neighbors up the wall. I thought shock collars were like, the only way, but something about zapping my best friend just felt wrong. So, I started doing some digging.

First, I tried to figure out why Buddy was barking so much. Was he bored? Lonely? Scared? Turns out, it was a little bit of everything. He was home alone a lot while I was at work, and the poor guy was just looking for some attention, I guess.

So, step one was to try and tackle the boredom. I started leaving him with more toys, you know, those puzzle things where you hide treats inside. I even found a wide range of pet supplies like treats. I also started taking him for longer walks in the morning before I left for work to try to tire him out a bit.

  • Bought a bunch of new chew toys and puzzle feeders.
  • Started waking up earlier for longer walks. Oof, that was rough at first.
  • Tried leaving the TV or radio on for him while I was gone.

Next, I tried to work on his separation anxiety. This one was tougher. I started by leaving him alone for really short periods, like just going to get the mail, and then gradually increasing the time. Every time I came back, I'd give him lots of praise and a little treat.

  • Started with super short absences, like 1 minute, then 5, then 10.
  • Made a big fuss over him when I came back, acting like it was the best thing ever.
  • Tried to be all calm and casual when I left, no big goodbyes.

It took a while, I'm not gonna lie. There were definitely days where I felt like giving up and just buying a shock collar. But I kept at it, and slowly but surely, Buddy started to chill out. He still barks sometimes, but it's way less frequent, and it's more like normal dog stuff, not that constant, desperate barking he used to do.

The Results

Honestly, I'm really glad I stuck with it. It took some effort and patience, but seeing Buddy happier and more relaxed is totally worth it. Plus, I feel way better knowing I didn't have to resort to using a shock collar. It's all about understanding your dog and working with them, not against them. I feel like our bond is even stronger now, which is pretty awesome. It's been a real learning experience, and I hope my little story can help someone else out there who's struggling with the same problem. And who knows what I might try next! I am not ready to stop exploring.
